|
Ultraviolet disinfection is a non-chemical approach to disinfection. In this
method of disinfection, no chemicals are added, which makes this process simple,
inexpensive and requires very low maintenance. Ultraviolet sterilisers utilize
germicidal lamps that are designed to produce a certain dosage of ultraviolet, at least 16,000 micro watt seconds per square centimetre. The principle of design is based on a product of contact time and intensity.

Sunlight naturally contains Ultra-Violet wavelengths which disinfects water.
The Ultra-Violet wavelengths 200 to 290 nanometres (nm) penetrate cell
membranes to disrupt the DNA molecules preventing cell replication with a
maximum effectiveness around 260 nm, depending on the organism. The
Ultra-Violet light generated by the Australian Ultra-Violet mercury vapour lamp
is particularly rich in these microbicidal wavelengths to ensure maximum
disinfection efficiency.

WATER DISINFECTION
Australian Ultra-Violet Products produce a wide range of Ultra-Violet
disinfection units which can be used from domestic applications, through
Industrial to Municipal disinfection units.

Unlike chlorination, there are no micro-organisms known to be immune to
Ultra-Violet light which
is highly effective against bacteria, viruses, algae,
moulds and yeasts. In practice bacteria and viruses are the cause of the major
waterborne pathogenic diseases. Of these, enteric viruses, hepatitis virus and
Legionella pneumophila have been shown to survive for considerable periods in
the presence of chlorine, but are readily eliminated by Ultra-Violet treatment.
Also of concern is the fact that chlorine forms trihalomethanes in drinking
water whereas Ultra-Violet treatment does not produce any toxic by-products.
